Codename: DNA

Codename: DNA takes you on a journey through your own body, where you are introduced to life and how it works. Codename: DNA tells you everything you need to know about DNA, from its discovery (back in 1869!), up to the present day and into the future.

Every living organism has DNA in its cells, from the smallest insects to the most gigantic whales. Human beings also have DNA. It’s what makes you unique. DNA determines why one person has green eyes and another one blue; why one cat’s fur is brown and white, while the other’s is black. DNA is like the recipe that determines why life is as it is.

These days, you often see knowledge of DNA being used to help the police track down criminals.

What can you see at Codename: DNA?
A Timeline shows you all the DNA discoveries that have been made so far. A 3D-film takes you on a journey through the human body, where you will see a cell dividing. You will witness how DNA attacks cancer calls. In the Vrolik Gallery (originally owned by the Vrolik family) you will see skeletons and preserved organisms (on loan from the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam and the Academic Medical Centre). At the ‘dressing table’ you can find out how unique you are, while the Age Machine shows you what you will look like in 30 years.
