In 1997, Queen Beatrix opened the Netherlands’ largest science center. In so doing, she opened a unique place in Amsterdam comprising five floors packed with scientific and technological things to do and discover. For more than 10 years, NEMO has been proving that science is captivating and fascinating. Science Center NEMO is the place to discover science and technology in a fun and educational way.
NEMO fully registered museum!
NEMO is now a fully registered Museum! In order to obtain the status of an ‘official museum’, you have to meet several requirements, such as ‘availability of basic facilities for the public and qualified staff’, and ‘ensuring the preservation of the collection’.

Facts & figures
When it opened, NEMO was immediately the Netherlands’ largest science center. Even though the term ‘science center’ is not yet very established in the Netherlands, around 500,000 people visit the green building above the IJ Tunnel in Amsterdam every year.

Future plans
NEMO is the Netherlands’ largest science center and great fun for children, their parents and grandparents. Adults without children will also find more than enough of interest in NEMO. For schoolchildren, NEMO is the largest interactive non-classroom-based learning environment and an essential part of any course about science and technology.

History
NEMO’s predecessors also had science and technology in their blood. The seed for what would eventually become NEMO was planted back in 1923 with the founding of the Labour Museum. In 1954, the name was changed to NINT, followed by newMetropolis in 1997. The name Science Center NEMO was introduced in 2000.

NEMO: what's in a name?
The name NEMO has been used throughout history by many famous authors to describe events and people who find themselves on the border between fantasy and reality. In Latin nemo means ‘no one’ and indicates a world between fantasy and reality. Visitors to NEMO Science Centre can become a scientist, technologist or technician for a day. Suddenly dreams are real.

The building & architect
An immense green building is located about 15 minutes walk from Amsterdam Central Station. The fascinating construction – often compared to a ship – is located above the IJ Tunnel. This is the Netherland’s largest science centre with the illustrious name: NEMO.
